The cell phone (also known as the Samsung T469) is exclusive to the T-Mobile phone  network in the USA, and it comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and 3G support.

Primarily designed for messaging, the Samsung Gravity 2 isn’t a particularly high-end phone. There’s a standard 2.4″ 240 x 320 pixel display, a fairly basic 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, an MP3 player and support for microSD expandable memory.

The slide-out QWERTY keypad has a fairly conventional layout with a small space bar in the centre (much more convenient than the Nokia N97, for example). The spacing between keys is good and should help to prevent more than one key being pressed at a time. There is also a useful “www./.com” key to make entering web addresses easier, and perhaps a rather less useful “smiley face” key.

The wholesale mobile phone  measures about 4.5 x 2.1 x 0.6 inches and weighs 4.4 ounces (or 114 x 52 x 15mm and 125 grams). Talktime is up to 5.5 hours with a maximum of 12 days standby time, we assume that these are GSM-only figures though.

It’s not the world’s most exciting phone, but it does manage to squeeze a decent keyboard into something that looks just like an ordinary cellphone, without making it too bulky.

Things are looking pretty peachy for the smart cell phone market both in the UK and on a global scale. In 2009 sales of Chines smart phones worldwide are expected to top 150 million, with a healthy proportion of those sales taking place in the UK, which accounts for about 14% of global mobile sales. By 2012 experts predict that this number will rise to 500 million, and this leap is not just going to be because of a shift in the market but because every phone will be `smarter` and everyone will be able to reap the benefits of the power in their pocket. Smart phones are also doing well despite the recession and a slight slowdown of mobile sales in general, and are helping to keep high street mobile retailers like the Car phone Warehouse making profits whilst others around them crumble. Let`s take a look at the wm smart phones out now and coming in the next year and see what they have to offer you.

• LG Arena – Apple`s iPhone is one of the reasons that the smart phone market is so buoyant, and LG are trying to replicate their rival`s success by basically replicating the iPhone itself, but squeezing in all the features that are missing from Apple`s darling product. To the untrained eye the Arena looks like a slightly smaller version of the iPhone with a large touch screen interface, attractive interface and big square application buttons. However, the Arena packs in a 5 meg pixel camera which wipes the floor with the iPhone`s measly effort. There`s also an FM radio and picture messaging to trump the iPhone. All of this in such a tiny package makes the battery life too short and the interface can feel sluggish at times, but it`s a valiant alternative.
• HTC Touch Diamond2 – Following on from the success of the original, the Diamond2 is another gorgeous touch screen smart phone from HTC which uses the Windows mobile OS. Aside from the good looks there`s the standard smart phone fare with Wi-Fi connectivity, HSDPA for fast downloads and mobile internet and a 5 mega pixel camera slapped on the back. It`s just a pity that the Windows software isn`t quite up to scratch when it comes to a touch sensitive interface, and people who`ve used the iPhone will be disappointed as online meizu phone  are a testament to.
• Acer Tempo DX900 – This is an odd one, but it is unique for UK users in as much as it is the only dual-SIM solution on the market which is a bonus for a select few. For most people this is a bit of a misnomer. It lacks the internal storage capacity of its contemporaries and it`s not the best looking thing in the world, but it does have two cameras, one for video calling and the other for snaps, and Wi-Fi, GPS and other smart phone fodder built in. It`s just not going to inspire you, especially for the £400 SIM free price tag.

Does the world need another MP3 player? As I sit here pouring over the contents of Samsung’s newest MP3 player, the Yepp YP-55i, it is a question that strikes me… and yet at first glance, the matt white finish of the Yepp player doesn’t easily reveal an answer. For consumers who can afford the Apple iPod, there really is no reason to buy another MP3 player – the iPod handles it all, stores hours and hours of music, and flashes “the new black,” glossy white, with great success. Still, $500-$700CDN is a lot to justify for something about the size of a deck of cards.

Portability also comes into play. Do music lovers like carrying around an iPod for the morning jog? Probably not, unless they want to strap it onto a belt and look the 21st century equivalent of Adam West’s 1960’s Batman.

Okay. The iPod isn’t thaaaat large, but as MP3 mp4 players continue to come down in price, manufacturers are segmenting them for every part of our daily lives. Smaller, fixed memory players like the players are just fine for the morning commute, a trip to the store, a jog around the block, or whatever. Olympus has announced the addition of the camera to its rugged compact camera series. It is claimed to be waterproof up to 3 meters, freeze proof up to -10 degrees and shockproof up to 1.5 meters. The camera has a 12MP sensor, a 2.7″ LCD with Tap Control, 3.6x zoom lens starting at 28mm and offers features such as Dual Image Stabilization and built-in ‘Magic’ filters.

Ricoh has released a firmware update for the camera compactmp digital slr camera. Version 1.25 fixes minor issues related to playback of images and orientation information. The firmware is available for immediate download from Ricoh’s website.

Think of the annual Photo Marketing Association (PMA) convention as a chance to visit the biggest digital camera store you’ll ever see in your life.

Taking up two floors of the  Convention Center, you’ll find all the big boys from Canon to Sony there along with tiny mom-and-pop outfits selling photo charm bracelets. The yearly meeting was originally targeted to small camera store owners, but these days, independents are rarer than an up day on Wall Street. Right before this year’s edition, in fact, the huge Ritz Camera chain went bust – no surprise as the vast majority of slr camera buyers in 2009 simply go to Best Buy, WalMart and the Internet to pick up their new toys.

Given the recession and the huge snowstorm in the northeast, the crowds at this season’s show were definitely down, but thankfully, the halls didn’t look like a neutron bomb had detonated.  mp digital slr camera pent several days wandering the aisles looking at all the newest digital cameras. Summer is the time for family picnics, beach vacations, and lots of holiday snapshots, so wholesale digital camera vendors have been busy in the three months since we last surveyed their new-model announcements. As you might expect, we’ve found plenty of impressive cameras scheduled to reach retailers between now and August. What we didn’t expect is that some manufacturers have suddenly become, well, girly:

“Like the little black dress or classic button-down shirt,” says the Kodak press release, “the EasyShare  digital camera is perfect for nearly every social occasion … Dressed in the season’s hottest colors — Absolute Pink, Red Shimmer, Midnight Black, and  camera is small enough to fit in this summer’s most trendy clutch.” We guess the days are truly gone when anyone nerdy enough to buy a digital camera defined a clutch as a transmission pedal instead of a small purse. 

Actually, even the most macho shopper might linger over the new EasyShare V series — the smaller-than-a-deck-of-cards cameras put a new spin on the usual switching between still photos and VGA-resolution videos by automatically converting videos into stop-action still pictures for printing or sharing. The latter measures 2.0 inches on the V530 versus 2.5 inches on the V550. Both cameras will ship in June.

Point-and-shoot beginners can check out mp digital slr camera, which respectively combine 5- and 4-megapixel resolution with 3X zoom, digital red-eye reduction, and a bundled EasyShare Printer Dock Series 3 that can produce 4 by 6-inch prints in as little as 90 seconds with or without a computer. Unlike ordinary R607s, the 3,000 cameras given the Stefani treatment (and first shown in her chart-topping “Hollaback Girl” video and the Ellen DeGeneres show) are turquoise and white with maroon hearts and Japanese kanji and katakana characters. We’d say more about HP’s adaptive lighting and in-camera red-eye removal technologies, but we’re totally psyched by the camera’s having one megapixel for each of Gwen’s four Harajuku Girls backup singers.

High Style

Elsewhere on the fashion beat, Sony boasts that the Cyber-shot DSC-T7 it just started shipping is its thinnest model yet (3.6 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches). The 5-megapixel (2,592 by 1,944) camera combines 3X zoom with ultra-closeup (1cm) focusing and Magnifying Glass modes, as well as 10 point-and-shoot scene modes such as Landscape, Beach, Twilight, and Candle. The T7 has a 2.5-inch hybrid transmissive/reflective LCD designed for washout-free viewing in bright sunlight..

Slim and stylish are also favorite words at Konica Minolta, whose new Dimage X60 claims the fastest startup time in the compact class — 0.5 second with 0.08-second shutter release lag. If you’d rather go slow than hurry up, automatic noise reduction enables slow-shutter shots (up to 4 seconds) in darkened conditions.

The 5-megapixel camera offers 3X zoom, 2-inch Super Macro close-ups, and Automatic Digital Subject Program Selection that selects the optimum shooting mode for the subject at hand; do-it-yourselfers can specify Portrait, Landscape, Sports Action, or Night Portrait mode. The  Dimage also has 15MB of internal memory for shooting without an SD or MMC flash card, and an Image Pasting feature that lets users personalize a shot by overlaying parts of an image in any of nine frames.

Finally, Canon gives us one more glamour-girl angle by hiring tennis star Maria Sharapova to do commercials for the camera compact announced in February. By the time she defends her Wimbledon title in June, the Russian beauty will be able to switch to the new PowerShot S2 IS, a 5-megapixel camera loaded with semipro features like 12X optical zoom (36mm to 432mm equivalent), a Super Macro mode advertised as focusing literally 0cm from the end of the lens barrel, and optical image stabilization technology that enables shooting at shutter speeds two stops lower than would otherwise be practical.
