Can I get into Medical School if...?
Alright guys I need you to be blunt with me. I ran into some issues in my past that really affected my GPA. In the end I expect to have it recovered to a 3.4 or close to it. I have all the necessary "prereq's" for med school (shadowing, leadership, volunteer work, etc). I have yet to take the MCAT but know that I have to get a killer score.
My question is - during the year that I had "issues" I earned an F on my transcript for Calculus and a D for Biology. I have since then retaken these courses the F is now an A and the D is a B+. My school allows me to do what is called a grade replacement so the F and D are not calculated into my overall GPA BUT apparently the grades remain on the transcript. So am I totally skrewed? When the admissions board is looking at my transcript and they see those low grades, are they going to slide it right over to the trash can? Or do you think I can redeem myself because I clearly retook the classes and know the material. Also, the bad grades were earned in two consecutive quarters and then I got my act together and improved my grades....
Usually you need to have all A's.
MLGay DERANKER | Jan 29, 2010
it says a lot that you retook the classes and did much better. The fact that you show tremendous improvement will reflect well on you. Just make sure the rest of your application is strong - extracurriculars, MCAT score, personal statement and teacher recommendations.
I got into med school with a 3.4 GPA, so it's certainly not out of the question. Good luck!

Eastern Promises
|
IMDB rating: 8.00 Plot: The mysterious and charismatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin is a driver for one of London's most notorious organized crime families of Eastern European origin. The family itself is part of the Vory V Zakone criminal brotherhood. Headed by Semyon, whose courtly charm as the welcoming proprietor of the plush Trans-Siberian restaurant impeccably masks a cold and brutal core, the family's fortunes are tested by Semyon's volatile son and enforcer, Kirill, who is more tightly bound to Nikolai than to his own father. But Nikolai's carefully maintained existence is jarred once he crosses paths at Christmastime with Anna Khitrova, a midwife at a North London hospital. Anna is deeply affected by the desperate situation of a young teenager who dies while giving birth to a baby. Anna resolves to try to trace the baby's lineage and relatives. The girl's personal diary also survives her; it is written in Russian, and Anna seeks answers in it. Anna's mother Helen does not discourage her, but Anna's irascible Russian-born uncle Stepan urges caution. He is right to do so; by delving into the diary, Anna has accidentally unleashed the full fury of the Vory. With Semyon and Kirill closing ranks and Anna pressing her inquiries, Nikolai unexpectedly finds his loyalties divided. The family tightens its grip on him; who can, or should, he trust? Several lives - including his own - hang in the balance as a harrowing chain of murder, deceit, and retribution reverberates through the darkest corners of both the family and London itself. |

Sen Sessions has New Facts -- Should They Be Considered Before Healthcare is Voted on?
Should Anybody Listen to Sen Sessions' New Facts? Or should the Senate just go ahead?
Obama for the past week has been touting the $350 Billion in deficit reduction savings over the next ten years.
Then today Sen Sessions comes out with a letter from CBO which says whoops! the democrats have been counting the effects of the Medicare Reforms twice. You can't both use the $400 Billion (supposedly saved by curtailing fraud waste and abuse) to EXTEND the MEDICARE PROGRAM'S SOLVENCY and also use that exact same $400 Billion to CREATE NEW HEALTHCARE PROGRAMS OUTSIDE OF MEDICARE.
That's double counting. When the double counting error is removed, it turns out that Obama-Care will greatly add to the annual deficits as far as the eyes can see and vastly increase our national debt.
Let me tell you a true story from the chronicles of the law. Some years ago (about 10 or 15) there was a Supreme Court in an eastern and southern state (could have been GA, TN, KY, or NC, don't remember) that said "It does not matter if the DNA evidence totally exonerates the accused and shows that he did not commit the crime --- He should be executed anyway -- because all the correct processes and procedures were followed in our Courts and the accused got due process of law."
The Court's written opinion saying this was widely criticised, as you can imagine. If you know better, you don't execute a man -- said the critics. The Court Justices were interviewed in the press and at least one of them, in the interviews defended the opinion as valid, sound, and good jurisprudence.
That was the day I stopped believing that capital punishment in civilian courts is an appropriate punishment. We are simply too dumb and too crazy to handle that much power.
Now back to our subject -- I told you the legal story because it is precisely where the Senate is at this exact moment.
The theory that Obama-Care is going to reduce the deficit has been shown, albeit at the last moment, to be a total and complete fraud. And yet the Senate in its insitutional arrogance and mental inertia plnas to vote for Obama-Care anyway tommorow morning at 8 a.m.
They can see plainly that this bill will entail huge deficits, not savings increases in the deficits, and a catastrophic national debt that no generations present or future will be able to bear, and yet, since all the test votes have been taken, and Senate rules and processes, and procedures have been followed, that catastrophic outcome which is now fully known does not matter. They will go ahead anyway.
It would never occur to anyone in the Senate to say, "Let's check this out -- see if the numbers were really double counted like the CBO and Sen Sessions says. If that means we have to wait till January to proceed, OK let's wait. Let's not do something totally stupid and irreversible now. A month more to get to the bottom of this makes much more sense than passing a bill that the whole Senate can see is based on fraudulent premises and duplicitous promises by Obama, Axelrod, Pelosi and Reid."
It will be almost as if G.W. Bush knew before invading Iraq that there was NO WMD there, but decided to go ahead anyway, what the heck.
Tommorrow morning at 8 a.m. the American Prospect will be Lethally Harmed by 100 persons who know better. This is the inertia of mental deadness and the arrogance of institutional proceduralism. We can't stop ourselves, no matter what the facts are.

Senator Sessions (Google his Remarks, Consider the reaction by Sen Reid, and ask yourself -- is this logical?)
Well, I guess they should take his words into consideration...
The guy above me said that Senator Sessions has no credibility. I wouldn't know since I don't even know him at all. So maybe he's wrong! (the Senator, not the guy above me.)
Or Obama is actually adding to the national American debt which to be honest it wouldn't surprise me because politicians do it all the time.
I wish I knew more but I'm a clueless about politics especially in America.
But yeah, it's not logical this Obama-care...

I also heard that. sounds like they count money like they count jobs created.
froghugger | Dec 23, 2009
There will always be new "facts". If they couldn't get the "facts" out sooner - then it just looks like another delaying tactic.
No, the new "facts" don't have to be considered before the vote, in my opinion.
Mad Mama | Dec 23, 2009
Yeah, that's all well and good, but if you think long-term strategy the Democrats have something going for them. When they lose in 2012 and Obamacare saddles the next Republican administration with huge debt obligations, they can complain that politician is over-spending, when in reality it was the Democrats fault in the first place.
They do this every time.
Pfo | Dec 23, 2009
Senator Sessions of Alabama has no credibility! He is a naysayer from the Republican far right and is doing anything to delay a process of caring and help to American citizens who cannot afford the outrageous costs of medical care.

Muslims, do you think this is fair?
A Norwegian newspaper has recently published a few Internet links that lead to the Muhammad cartoons.
As a result, 1000 Muslim taxi drivers had blocked the central roads in Oslo with their cars between 2 am and 4 am.
Next week, the Muslims are planning to block lots of roads throughout Oslo during the rush hours, making it hard for people to go to work and come back home.
Do you think it's fair that such a demonstration, which has not gained permission by the police, blocks the streets and stops traffic for innocent people because of one single newspaper?
@eternal - okay, so an entire city with over half a million in population, has to face these consequences because of the actions of 3-4 people working for a single newspaper?
Is that fair to you?
@Victor W - I never said I agree with the Muhammad cartoons.
All I'm saying is that retaliation like this doesn't help the Muslim's cause and only serves as punishment to innocent people who had nothing to do with the cartoons.
So please stop your embarrassing assumptions about me.
@Zakariah - No, but that does not justify ruining an entire city's transportation. There are other ways of dealing with this besides ruining the day for thousands of people who have nothing to do with the cartoons.
@Zeeshan - I agree with you that Islam should be respected. But the Muslim population should also respect the Norwegian people. Respect is a mutual thing.
It is lack of respect to block the roads for innocent people so they won't make it to their job. Why should the innocent people have to suffer?
join the real world since when do muslims consider whether or not their actions are fair they only care about themselves. The locals should slash the tyres of these taxis

and yes fair don't insult religous beliefs and nobody insults the legals system.
edit: yes true, but the message is muslim will not take to your jokes like christians and jews because next thing you know our prophet will be mocked on tv day in and day out.
eternal | Feb 06, 2010
I think it's not fair to the public.
But I think if the Norwegian Government are caring enough to its own people, they can just issue an apology and directed the newspaper to stop making fun on religious sensitivities.
Unless your entire government feel that making fun on other people's sensitivities is much more important than public like you, then you are barking at the wrong tree & surely I feel sorry for a naive Norwegian cirizen like you.
Victor W | Feb 06, 2010
Is it fair for a newspaper to publish links it KNOWS will cause offense.?
Ask yourself how the message of Islam has been preserved without graven images of God or the prophet?
Look how all other faiths have become diluted with idolatry because they don't preserve these things.
There are more important things in life than the rat race.

In The Name of Allah, The Creator and the Ruler of the Worlds
Think of a situation like this... suppose in a Muslim majority country, the Muslims make a funny picture of Jesus (pbuh) { which they will never do as its disrespectful to the other religion} wouldn't the Christians there rebel?? The Govt isn't supporting them, no one is listening to their voice.. then rn't they forced to rebel like this?? Just think about this..
I believe that the Govt there should take immediate action against the man who made Muhammad (pbuh) 's picture.. They should know that the Islam is the 2nd largest religion of the world and it should be respected!
Enough Said! Hope I helped!
ASalamualikum!

life's not fair buddy. but to be honest its not fair that they made the cartoons. they're obviously hurt by it. but at the same time its not fair that they're doing that either. But its very rude that the newspaper has those extremely rude cartoons in them.

@Zainab, to say life isn't fair contradicts the status of the one who has given us life, and HE describes himself as Al Adl (The Just).
Abdul-Jabaar | Feb 06, 2010
I don't think it's fair of people who live in a country that values freedom of speech, of the press, and of religion, to suddenly decide that there's too much freedom of religion or that freedom of speech and religion belongs only to them.
Speech, the press, and religion are not free when they are limited.
Until Muslims recognize that the same freedoms that allow them to practice their religion openly in countries without a Muslim majority, to speak about their beliefs, and to publish information about those beliefs also allows other people to mock their (or anyone else's) beliefs, they will constantly be in conflict with the Western societies in which they live.
I am appreciating the irony of them feeling free to protest because they don't like freedom of the press.

The island has an evil reputation. What role do you think it will play in the story?
"Off there to the right--somewhere--is a large island," said Whitney. "It's rather a mystery--"
"What island is it?" Rainsford asked.
"The old charts call it `Ship-Trap Island,"' Whitney replied." A suggestive name, isn't it? Sailors have a curious dread of the place. I don't know why. Some superstition--"
"Can't see it," remarked Rainsford, trying to peer through the dank tropical night that was palpable as it pressed its thick warm blackness in upon the yacht.
"You've good eyes," said Whitney, with a laugh," and I've seen you pick off a moose moving in the brown fall bush at four hundred yards, but even you can't see four miles or so through a moonless Caribbean night."
"Nor four yards," admitted Rainsford. "Ugh! It's like moist black velvet."
"It will be light enough in Rio," promised Whitney. "We should make it in a few days. I hope the jaguar guns have come from Purdey's. We should have some good hunting up the Amazon. Great sport, hunting."
"The best sport in the world," agreed Rainsford.
"For the hunter," amended Whitney. "Not for the jaguar."
"Don't talk rot, Whitney," said Rainsford. "You're a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?"
"Perhaps the jaguar does," observed Whitney.
"Bah! They've no understanding."
"Even so, I rather think they understand one thing--fear. The fear of pain and the fear of death."
"Nonsense," laughed Rainsford. "This hot weather is making you soft, Whitney. Be a realist. The world is made up of two classes--the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are hunters. Do you think we've passed that island yet?"
"I can't tell in the dark. I hope so."
"Why? " asked Rainsford.
"The place has a reputation--a bad one."
"Cannibals?" suggested Rainsford.
"Hardly. Even cannibals wouldn't live in such a God-forsaken place. But it's gotten into sailor lore, somehow. Didn't you notice that the crew's nerves seemed a bit jumpy today?"
"They were a bit strange, now you mention it. Even Captain Nielsen--"
"Yes, even that tough-minded old Swede, who'd go up to the devil himself and ask him for a light. Those fishy blue eyes held a look I never saw there before. All I could get out of him was `This place has an evil name among seafaring men, sir.' Then he said to me, very gravely, `Don't you feel anything?'--as if the air about us was actually poisonous. Now, you mustn't laugh when I tell you this--I did feel something like a sudden chill.

Drake Wants His Debut, Thank Me Later, To Drop In February
16.09.09
It looks like you'll be thanking Drake sooner than later. On Tuesday, Drizzy called in to Big Tigger's Washington, D.C., radio show and said he's hoping to release his highly anticipated debut Thank Me Later at the top of 2010.
"The storm is brewing," Drake said. "The ominous clouds are starting to form. It's about to be a problem. I don't know, I'm hoping February. That'll be a nice release month. It's gonna follow the same formula as the mixtape. It's gonna be a step up. That's my goal. It's gonna be very dark and sexy and all the things I like to embody in my music. You're gonna hear me rapping about my life."
Drake told MTV News in previous interviews that he wants collaborations with Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne on his debut.
"His creative process is so unfair," Drake said of his mentor Wayne during an interview with MTV News at Young Money Presents: The America's Most Wanted Music Festival. "I'll work so hard to get a hot verse on a song with Wayne. All he'll do is traipse around the studio, like, 'I'm ready,' and kill me or match it.
"Whatever is going on in his head is not human and it is not fair," the 22 year-old jokingly added. "I'm angry about it."
Drake released an EP of his So Far Gone mixtape on Tuesday, featuring the new track "Fear." Drake also told Big Tigger that he's at home resting and recuperating from recent knee surgery and isn't too mobile yet.

Muslims: what do you think this means? whats happening?
for the past year a bunch of weird stuff has been happening to me, this is how it started:
i began looking through Islam, and why islam, and why christianity and judaism has been played around with and stuff, but not religious really, just interested. then one night my mom was staying the night at our Masjid for the last 10 days of Ramadan and nobody was home that night except for my dad who slept all the way downstairs. so i had this 10 second dream of black cats on trash bins and stuff, suddenly i wake up, my mind is awake and my eyes slightly open but my body is asleep, i couldnt move as hard as i tried, then i face the door which is right next to the steps and i hear and feel running coming up, like a million people, and the background is cats meowing and babies crying and people screaming, i got so scared i really felt like somthing was going to get me so i start crying and i try to say Surahs from the Quran out loud but because my body is numb and asleep my mouth doesnt open so it comes out as just noise, then after a minute the Fajr adhan goes on and everything just stopped.
then i began really looking into Islam, my faith begins to glow. then again almost the same thing happens. nobodys home so i sleep on the couch not wanting to sleep in my room when no ones home, then suddenly my eyes open, bodies still asleep, and i see a purple shadow thing infront of me, it reaches out his hand and tells me to take it, but 1.) i cant move and 2.) i wouldnt take that things hand even if i could. then it just went away.
then i have this dream of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) telling me to not go astray to the devil. It was such a meaningful dream.
okay then just about 3 or 4 months ago all i live for is God, everything about me i do for God. but i ofcourse i still did minor sins and sometimes major sins without noticing. like i have a stealing problem, i know its bad, but i never steal from people just stores and it became addicting i keep promising God id stop but idk what happens. i got caught twice in my life but still i insist. i always take cvs supplies.
so i had this dream wednsday night that a man set up an alarm system and told me to try it out, and it kept ringing. the thurday afterward me and my friend were by cvs and i really wanted to go in but i knew i wouldnt be able to come out without taking something and after that dream i really didnt want to risk it so i didnt go. then my other friend tells me that same day she got caught stealing at cvs. it was so wierd it was like God sent me a warning because i was this close to entering. if i hadnt had that dream i would be the one caught and banned from there!
then just yesterday i pushed one of my moms perfumes by accident and it did a dominoes effect with all her perfumes, i was doing somthing at the time and i felt bad just leaving them there, and i knew id forget so i thought if i made a promise to God that id pick them up for his sake id remember, so ofcourse i go on doing what im doing and 5 minutes later i turn around to see who just entered the room next to the one im in and i hear a bunch of glass hitting eachother i turn around and all 20 perfume bottles are totally up straight!! i didnt even touch them!
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS HAPPENING TO ME?? ALOT MORE OF THESE THINGS HAPPENED BUT I DONT FEEL LIKE WRITING THEM ALL!!
and lately i have thins clean loving feeling in my heart and when i read Quran or Hadith or listen to nasheeds i always end up crying from the beauty Allah has created. i love Allah more then life itself more than me, my family and everything! but whats happening to me??
Quit asking this. It is a stupid nonsensical questions.

I want to be honest with you, you said in the beggining of your statement that you were not that religious, then you say that you had a dream about the prophet peace and blessings be upon him, I want to point out that you must be religious and must obey the prophet and love him more then you love yourself in order for such an honorble thing to occur. Second all those dreams you having is really weird, try reading quran before you go to sleep, I read surat ikhlas, surat alfalaq, surat alnas, the i read ayat al kursi, while laying on my right, as the prophet (pbuh) did, the say this dua's,
Allahuma ahyanee ba'ad ith en tameetanee wa'anta ala kulee shay in gadir
( O Allah revive me after you put me to death ( meaning sleep) and you are capable of all things
and say:
Bismika rabi watha'atu jambi wabika arfa'ah allahuma in akhathta roohee farhamha wa in rafa'ataha fahfath ha beema hafithtiha bi ebadika al saliheen
(In the name of Allah I lay my soul, or my body, and by your will I lift it, O Allah if you take my soul then show mercy upon it, and if you raise it then protect with those amongst there souls you have protected.)
say There you bear witness that Allah is god and Mohamed peace and blessings be upon him is his final messenger
The prophet (pbuh) says anyone that says these then dies in his/her sleep enters paradise by the will of Allah.
