Idiocracy (2006)

IMDB rating: 6.40

Plot: The purpose of the program set up by the Pentagon, called the "Human Hibernation Project," is designed so that the military can save their best men for when they're needed most. According to the officers heading the project, too many times the talents and expensive training of the best pilots and soldiers go to waste during times of peace. So they enlist Bauers (Wilson), the most under-achieving average guy they've got, to be the test subject for the initial hibernation experiment. Also participating in the top-secret program is Rita (Rudolph), a prostitute who agreed to take part in exchange for dropping some criminal charges against her, among other things. Of course, the experiment, which was to last only a year, goes under due to the arrest of Officer Collins, who is busted for heading a prostitution ring. Seeing as though he was in charge of the experiment, one of the only ones who knew of its existence, and "due to a lot of top-secret red tape... and the massive scandals and base closure that followed, Joe and Rita were forgotten about.

Are people who are more intelligent also more likely to consider having an elective abortion?
And if so, does this mean that legalizing abortion targets intelligent people, thus encouraging the creation of an idiocracy?

It would seem that way. Also consider that more intelligent people begin reproducing at a later life stage and produce fewer children than their less intelligent counterparts. Fear for the future.

Modern Hong Kong action movies?
Is anyone familiar with any good modern Hong Kong action movies? Such as Dragon Tiger Gate, SPL (Kill Zone), or Flash Point? Thanks a bunch! I would mostly prefer movies from Donnie Yen. I've seen Ip Man already and Ballistic Kiss so.... Thank you! :D

Watch the Shaws Brother's "Single Arm Fighter" directed by the late Mr Cheung and Taiwan's "Dragon Door Hostel" directed by the late Mr Woo Jin Tsuen, both are of similar timing back in the 70s. One of the latest is scripted from a popular Hong Kong comic, starred by Aron Kwok, Nickolas Tse.

okay, I have a large Kung Fu movie collection and if you want to see a good Donnie Yen movie, you should check out the following...
IRON MONKEY- donnie Yen, easily the best movie her ever made

MOON WARRIORS- andy lau, maggie cheung, anita mui- amazing wuxia-pian movie, much like DTG and unique compared to toher modern kung fu movies

NAKED WEAPON- maggie Q- underrated female assassin movie with english language and great fights
I much prefer Shaw Brothers movies, and some of them are better than anything coming out of HK and China today like...

SHAOLIN TEMPLE-1976- not the Jet Li movie with the same name, best KF movie ever
INVINCIBLE SHAOLIN- another classic
FIVE DEADLY VENOMS-amazing cat and mouse movie with unbelieveable fight scenes
36th CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN-great story of the temple, and based on true events
THE YOUNG MASTER-jackie chan (not shaw) fast and furious fights, best choreography
I could be here all day naming movies worth watching, but these are all classics and worthy in any collection

enjoy!!!

Trouble at my work with a Southerner?
I teach elementary school here in Los Angeles. I am in my early thirties. I teach fifth grade and one of my co workers is a Southerner. Real Southern. North Carolina. Very pronounced accent. Only person on our staff who chooses to live in a trailer park. Drives a full size ancient pick up truck. Has white hair and a goatee. I think he actually chews tobacco. His breath certainly smells bad enough. Got his teaching credential back when all you needed was a Batchelor's Degree and a warm body. The guy is a a dinosaur. He resists change and drives everyone crazy. He had a fit that this week we started to do attendance on a computer instead of a paper book. Anyway, my worst problem with this guy, is he always INSISTS on calling me "son." This infuriates me. My father was a great man. This guy belongs in the movie "Deliverance." How DARE he call me son. I am not a little boy. I have my degrees, and I did my four years in the Army. I think he does this to belittle me, because I am very small. I have long hair, and he always comments that from the back he can't tell if I am a man or a woman. So we had a meeting today, and he called me "Son," again. And for the hundreth time, I said "I am not your son." So later in the meeting we were assigning jobs, and I pointed to my nemesis and said "And Grandma here can do the recycling of the bottles and cans with his class." He lost it. He threw a book across the room and stormed out to complain to the principal. And everyone at the meeting acts like I did something wrong. He has called me "son," against my wishes for years. What's so wrong about me giving HIM a name he doesn't like?
I left out the worst thing he did. We were in the faculty dining room and everyone was talking about the Army. And how hard it was to be in the Army. So I proudly mentioned I had been in the Army. Then Mr. Hillbilly then said "A little squirt like you? I find that hard to believe! What did you do?" I said "57E." He said "I was in the infantry, I never heard of that, what is a 57E?" I said "Laundry and Shower Specialist." Then he made a big deal out of belittling my military service and got everyone to laugh at me. That was his big moment of glory in the sun. The man is a jerk.

Talk to the principle yourself and tell him you are getting tired of this guy's behavior. You feel being called "son" and the hair jokes are forms of harassment. It is probably going to be next to impossible to fire this guy though. Once they have tenure, you're stuck with them until they retire.

I'm not against southerners, and I don't mind a southern woman calling me terms of endearment. However, a proper southern gentleman or lady does not make fun of other individuals.

Jennifer | Oct 20, 2009

He had a problem with it because he is from the south and he is older. Not only did you call him old but you insinuated that he is a woman. He is very set in his beliefs and ways and he does not see you as an equal and he never will. He believes that you are required to treat him with respect whether he deserves it or not. He may be condescending at times but you were outright rude. It sounds like you are an angry person who is passive aggressive until you finally can't take it anymore. He's been calling you son for years? You should have done something about it before now rather than just tell him not to call you that. It sounds like you are offended by him and decided to be petty and get back at him rather than try to sort this whole mess out.
Eeryis | Oct 20, 2009

He probably calls every body younger than him son. Maybe you should not take him or yourself so seriously. He hasn't called you girl yet has he? You could call him pops but it sounds like that might get you in trouble at work. Experience tells me that no matter where you go in life, there will always be somebody that rubs you wrong.
some dude | Oct 20, 2009

Well son, you need to lighten up a bit. It is only a title, and if this is your biggest complaint about the guy then you need to find something better to do. We all have to deal with people that annoy us, but attacking them back doesn't solve anything. Just because he is being unprofessional doesn't mean you need to sink to the level of your students and insult him back. A bigger man just bushes it off and moves on.
Lord Zane Vorhis | Oct 20, 2009

What's so different about a North Carolinian significantly older than you calling you "son" and you calling him grandma?

Simple.

When he calls you "son" it's a colloquialism with no intended offense.

When you called him "grandma" in the middle of a staff meeting your intention was to be disrespectful, piss him off, embarrass him or teach him a lesson.

Your coworkers clearly recognized the difference.
BBG | Oct 20, 2009

To an older person everyone twenty years younger is a child, no matter how old you are. When he calls you son it is not a cut down. He may think of you as the son he wish he had. He may only have girls. I have one son, when girls come to see him I enjoy seeing them and think what it would be like if I had a girl. This old man may save you one day. Try being nice to him. Ask him if he has a son.
d.j | Oct 20, 2009

If it wasn't for the elders just how would you have gotten your degrees? You can bet your sweet bippy that old man would have had your back when no one else would; now I'm thinking the day will come and you're gonna need a good friend with wisdom and not only he won't be around, but neither will the rest of your peers. Bad move boy.
Love is the principle thing | Oct 20, 2009

Him calling you "son" was not intended to belittle you and he probably had no clue it infuriates you. There were other ways you could have handled the situation.

You were rude and disrespectful to him, and you know it - calling a grown man "grandma"? Please, you knew exactly what you were doing. You've categorized him based on what little you know about the South and the people here. "Deliverance" is not norm here anymore than it is anywhere else.

You owe the man an apology.
gwhizcat | Oct 20, 2009

ok i live in north carolina and we are not that country lol but he is an old man and he calls everyone son not just you just about everyone here that is old calls anyone younger son it doesnt mean anything its just a saying nothing personal, but for you to call him grandma you were really in the wrong for calling him a woman that is belittleing him, and you should apologize but while you do explain yourself and he might understand. but about the army thing yeah he was wrong about that bc that was just mean
olivia h | Oct 20, 2009

From now on he should call you BOY.
You sure aren't a man.
Shame on you.
Judging people by movie stereotypes!
And you're a TEACHER???
Gods help us.

Your father was a great man?
And he couldn't teach you better than this?
You are a disgrace.
Your father is probably rolling in his grave in shame.
You owe the man an apology.
And your collegues.

Saudi Laws: Which is more acceptable to Allah?
1. A wealthy person slays another Saudi in anger. He bestows the price of 100 camels. Do any of the camels go to the widow of the deceased?

2. A Saudi kills a person in secret and is never caught, but repents several years later in grief at what he has done. He takes his own life by poisoning himself in the desert after praying for mercy and compassion?

3, A poor man does not have 100 camels, but accidentally ran over a Prince's son who darted into the street while he turned to check the items on the back seat of the rented car? He serves many years in prson, is tortured by bribed guards, and finally dies there.

4. A man kidnaps the daughter of a foreigner and she becomes his wife. This is not discovered until many years later, when she has five children, the eldest is 27. How many camels, and must she be restored to her family? What is the compensation or penalty and how is it bestowed?

5. A wealthy person commits a crime of vengeance against a respected merchant's premises. The building of the merchant falls down in consequence onto a group of foreigners killing them. One is Chinese, one Indonesian, one American. Also a French woman and her husband, who is Italian. Three Saudis who are with the foreigners are killed. How many camels for each? Which foreigners are worth the most or the least camels? The son of one of the Saudi drivers killed recovers. Does he receive the camels paid for his father's death?

Do any of these camels go to the State? Are they taxed?

Does Allah use His judgment or Saudi Law in considering this matter?

Who is least and most acceptable to Allah here?

What if one of victims of the wealthy does not wish to accept the camels as retribution for the killing of their family member? Does the extremely wealthy Saudi pay the poor man's penalty?

Is everyone equal before the law with respect to camels as retribution?

If they are not equal, is this form of retribution haram to Allah?

Are 100 camels equal to a kidnapping?

What does a poor family do with 100 camels, or can they receive the monetary equivalent?

Did this law originate in a legislature?

Is the originator of this law haram or holy?

What about the judges who decide the case? Are they safe it is discovered later that Allah is not pleased?

Or will all be displeasing to Allah, but some more so? If so, which ones incur the least favor?

Can an Iranian who commits murder there pay with 100 camels?

This is one of the problems that arise when you have a a faith-based government.

This would probably fit better in the Ramadan section.
Abdul-Jabaar | Feb 11, 2010

Only God knows. All we know comes from the Quran. Frankly, I think these scenerios are a bit outdated. I don't believe many people in Saudi Arabia still use camels this much or any of that. Also, Islam isn't all about mathematics and division of properties. It is mentioned but that isn't central to the religion. Islam is a way of life, the Quran is our guide which we must use to become a good person. So if a person truly followed the religion closely, he would let his anger overtake him and kill someone (that's a sign of serious anger problem), kidnap a girl and force her to marry him, or any of that. Tax is not mentioned in the Quran, to the best of my knowledge. Saudi laws are not the best example of Islam. For example women are not allowed to drive when according to the religion, parents must teach their children to swim and ride horses (today that can mean driving). Girls are not excluded from this.

Are 100 camels equal to a kidnapping?
My answer: Only God knows for sure. He's the one that will judge the person on Judgment Day. But in my opinion, it depends. Allah knows our intentions and thoughts and secrets. If the man did not feel remorse for the kidnapping and did not care to repent, I doubt it matters how much gold or camels he gives. If he sincerely felt remorse and wanted to change, maybe God may forgive him.

All of which I've already said can be applied to your other questions. I recommend you read the Quran thoroughly and carefully if you haven't already to familiarize yourself better with the religion. It's not meant to make things complicated.

1. Killing is always wrong. He should repent and try to make sure that the widow doesn't go into poverty if her husband was the only one making good money. Of course it would be good if he gave her camels.

bring Back old disney! And I mean Old!?
Look I'm not trying to be offenceing to anyone who likes lizzie mig- eh idk how to spell it. But I'm talking about Old Disney! I mean the Black & White. Do you remember MickeyMouse? Donald Duck? Goofy pluto all of them! I Always ALWAYS loved goofy and I'm a voice makeover person and I can sound like him. I be talking to my friends in A goofy way and do "Uh Huck!" yahooohoohooweee!" All The Stuff He said. But Remember Dippy Dawg? the very first goofy! Doanld Duck. Remember it all started with a Mouse! If Walt Disney Was here today he be saying. What happened? Whats with this Mickey Mouse Clubhouse? Where Whinnie The pooh? Why did they put Darber in there, it's just like barbie! Wheres WD version of The three little pigs? Alice In Wonderland, this isn't right! He's In Heaven Right Now looking down on us with everyone else and it's like people forgot what Disney Was about! I'm 12 and I'll admit right here. I don't like Jonas crappers all of them hanna throwupata! This Isn't Right! Where's Soembody throwing a pie at somebodys face wheres if somebody got hit by an Anvil they pulled thereself right up! Now They Think kids like stuff with farting and that! Like that new stupid show Kid buttowiski! Where I Went To WDW I was like...Disney wheres the true meaning? hey they can keep there brain washing tv shows they got on now! But why don't they make a new channel called something like. DisneyComofrts? OldDisney? SOmethingand put all the black & white shows on! Whinnie the Pooh! All of them, look I dont like Twighlight Or this crap but hey i'm a kid who wishes for the 1932 cartoons! I have a whole collection of tiggers and well never sell them! The disney they got on now wasnt meant for pre schoolers! Please do you want this back?

The truth is. It isn't lost!! One of my favorite cartoons is felix the cat. It's a old black and white one. It's on hulu.com i watch it on there. You can find dvds and vhs tapes of the good old cartoons by Disney of course you have to pay money to get them most of the time, but lost they are not! Now, the political statement you where making, If your worried about kids, well.. Get them off the TV. 30mins is a good amount of time of tv per day but most Americans watch thousands of hours on it.
Mr. Semi-Perfect | Jan 30, 2010

I'd watch a Disney Classic channel that had old cartoons, sure. And I agree, everything on there now is crap. Heck, even the non-animated stuff they showed 10, 20 years ago was better than what they have now.
BlueAngelGal | Jan 30, 2010

Disney Comforts would be an awesome channel!!!
I agree!! wheres classic Disney? and i don't know if you like stuff this new but any thing classic animation is what Disney should be. They should stop airing Disney Channel. Or just keep it there. But Disney Comforts would be awesome!! I really like that idea!!!!
{*RandomGirl*} | Jan 31, 2010

Yes, I agree with your concept and would watch a Disney Comforts channel, however I disagree with one part of your comments: "If Walt Disney Was here today he be saying. What happened?" Walt Disney was KNOWN as being highly progressive and would never sit back and rest on his old B&W series. He would be out there trying new things everyday - just like the company that bears his name does.

Have you seen the CHRISTMAS CAROL movie yet?
was it scary? i want to take my 5 year old cousin and i want to know how scary it really is.. so:
1. What made it scary?
2. 1-10 how scary? 10 being NOT FOR A 5 YEAR OLD
3. any specific scenes
4. any other opinions

I took my 6 year old and 2 year old. They weren't scared by it at all, but they weren't entertained either. Both wound up falling asleep about half way through. Admittedy, they're both pretty hard to scare.

1. the only thing that approached scary was the last ghost, but he wasn't bad.
2. maybe a 3 or 4. Monster House was much scarier for kids if that helps any.
3. I can't really think of anything specifically scary.
4. it's just not very good. they lighten it up with a few chase scenes, but it's still filmed very dreary / victorian, which isn't very appealing for young children. the dialogue is taken straight from the story (though it's edited a little) and isn't really accessible to kids.
