What does a spoiler in the back of the car do?
Do I really need a spoiler on my car? Besides the fact that some cars (not all, I'm afraid) look nicer with a spoiler, what does it really do and does it work? Is it worth paying extra to have one on my car?

not a thing

unless it's huge and your going 100 miles and hour.

Ruin | Jul 24, 2008

you don't need one unless you drive a dragster, it stabilizes the car to keep it down

i could be wrong though since I'm a girl
lisalau | Jul 24, 2008

Doesn't it help keep the car's rear end down when high speed is involved?
tigerlilyaz | Jul 24, 2008

it pushes the back end towards the ground giving you slightly better traction in the back. no, you dont need one, they just look cool too. they work, but probably not enough for youre driving style
DreGGs | Jul 24, 2008

its supposed to give less wind Resistance, but i don't think that's whats going to happen.
uc489 | Jul 24, 2008

At higher speeds, the spoiler "pushes" the car down on its suspension. This helps with traction and handling. To illustrate this, put you hand out the window of a fast moving car and put your fingers together, making your hand flat. Then point your hand downwards. Your hand will be "pushed" downwards by the air moving past your hand.

I wouldn't bother getting one, myself.
apb450 | Jul 24, 2008

A spoiler provides down pressure at high speeds to keep auto from floating and stay manageable while driving
ed9455 | Jul 24, 2008

They are more of a cosmetic item now days. The actual intent was to help keep a car planted more firmly on the road at speed. This is why racing vehicles still employ spoilers.
Rudy_kazootie | Jul 24, 2008

won't do anything for your car except look cool, unless you plan on going over 200mph. its real purpose is for racecars to keep them grounded by traping the air currents around them and help push the car to the ground and push it thru like a jet stream. (not sure about the physics of it just the purpose)
vogtvisions | Jul 24, 2008

I don't think much besides looks. Maybe some slight aerodynamic purpose depending on the car.
csuramgirl | Jul 24, 2008

A rear spoiler is designed to change the flow of air over the rear of the vehicle. This change in air flow increases downforce on the rear of the vehicle to help improve traction in an effort to prevent sliding while cornering.

The effectiveness of the spoiler depends on the angle or the wing portion and the speed of the vehicle.

In general, the spoilers that are available through the manufacturers as "optional accessories" or "standard accessories" are cosmetic in nature only.
bacabuck | Jul 24, 2008

you do not need one on the back of your car...sure some look good but all it does is add weight and unnecessary downforce to your car, that is as long as you dont have a race car
Joe | Jul 24, 2008

On a street car a spoiler does absolutely nothing but sit there and look good ( in some cases! ). Racing teams spend a lot of time and money designing and developing spoilers for race cars in wind tunnels that help increase down force on the road to give better traction for acceleration and turning. At the higher speeds experienced on a race track a spoiler can and does provide a benefit, but it has to be properly designed for the specific application. But on a street vehicle, even when buddy puts the great big honkin' spoiler on the back of his neon, it's doing very little! It's probably creating more drag and slowing him down rather than speeding him up! If a car comes with a factory spoiler...fine, but I sure wouldn't waste my time or money on putting one on a car after the fact.
LPG Guy | Jul 24, 2008

Spoilers are there simply for looks, to make the car look like it's a high-speed racer.

Most spoilers are not even designed correctly for real high-speed performance. They wouldn't work correctly even if the car were driven 175-200 mph. In fact, they would create additional drag and slow the car down.
tenofeight | Jul 24, 2008

On most street cars it's an ornament...

On racing cars it holds the rear end down At high speed, something you don't need on the street.
Sophie B | Jul 24, 2008

Its just for looks for most cars,If you are planning on going 100mph plus then it will work for better traction.Mostly high end cars, sports cars use them.

Star Trek: Insurrection

Star Trek: Insurrection
Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

IMDB rating: 6.40

From the beginning of the Federation, the Prime Directive was clear: no Starfleet expedition may interfere with the natural development of other civilizations. But now Picard is confronted with orders that undermine that decree. If he obeys, 600 peaceful residents of Ba'ku will be forcibly removed from their remarkable world, all for the reportedly greater good of millions who will benefit from the Ba'ku's Fountain of Youth-like powers. If he disobeys, he will risk his Starship, his career, his life. But for Picard, there's really only one choice. He must rebel against Starfleet . . . and lead the insurrection to preserve Paradise.

Why does Nero from Star Trek look different from other Romulans?
In all of the other star trek TV shows, the romulans look mostly the same- but Nero looks way different. Why is this? The only thing I noticed that look the same are the romulans in Star Trek Insurrection- Is he like them?

From Memory Alpha: "Due to their shared ancestry, Vulcans and Romulans possessed very similar physiology. (...) Most Romulans had two brow ridges above the bridge of their nose, forming a V-shape on the forehead. However, a minority of Romulans lack these ridges, making them outwardly indistinguishable from Vulcans."
In the prequel comic Star Trek: Countdown, an explanation is given for the tattoos on Nero and his crew: "There was a tradition on Romulus that when a loved one died you would paint your grief upon your skin. Ancient symbols of love and loss. In time the paint would fade, and with it the period of mourning. Life would go on. We paint these symbols on our skin now. But we burn them deep. So that they will never fade. Because life does not go on. We died with our friends. We died with our families. We died with Romulus. And all that is left is revenge."

Hope that answers your question :)

because the actor that plays Nero is Australian not British or Canadian.
hollywood | Jul 01, 2009

I suppose they wanted Nero to look different and to not just blend in because he's the bad guy and everybody has to know who the bad guy of the movie is... as time went on and the effects got better the aliens all started looking different (check out the Original Series' Klingons and compare them to how they look on all the other series) I guess since Insurrection came right before the new movie and is therefore it's closest living relative they're going to look more alike than Romulans from any other show/movie because there's not a huge make-up/effects gap between them.
Spock Fan | Jul 01, 2009

Were there any Romulans in the ST Insurrection movie? I remember the Romulans from The Original Star Trek series, and from Star Trek the Next Generation series. And the Romulans were much fiercer looking in TNG. They had more grooves in their faces and protruding foreheads, and a more deadly threatening demeanour, and quite frankly were more interesting and well developed within the plot than the original Star Trek Romulans. Especially the Tasha story for instance.

Nero looked like a guy with Tattoos, really peeved off mind you, but not the Romulans from any of the series, so you're right on in your observation in my opinion.
Tina Vashniche | Jul 01, 2009

The universe has been reimagined, some stuff will be different,
Also most of the Romulans we have seen before have been Military, and Nero and his ships crew were just civilian miners as he said out making an honest living. I would guess that before Spock messed up Romulus and Remus Nero and his guys may have been pretty normal and decent folk.

Pocahontas vs Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World?
for me i think Disney should have just left Pocahontas as is i loved the romance between John Smith and her! and then they killed it in the second movie. i know they did it to make the movie more historical and stuff but still i loved the first movie a lot more.

Bonus questions:

1) whats your favorite animated Disney movie?

I've always watched the series (all of em) and seen all the movie. Worst in my opinion was the Undiscovered Country. A few of them drug along and were stretched, but that one bore me to tears. Best I would have to give the nod to the original. Awesome effects for it's time with a great cast and cool little twist with the Voyager thing. I also liked the remake and how they were able to tip their hat to the original for trekies, but made it enjoyable for people that had never watched them before.
