Play Dead (2009) IMDB rating: 5.20 Plot: Ronnie Reno (Klein) is a former TV action hero in dire need of a comeback. I think I have BDD, but no-one understands (long, but answers much appreciated)?
Basically, I am a 15 year old girl who has never been happy with her appearance. I have never thought of myself as beautiful, or really even pretty, and even when I was 7 I wanted blonde, straight hair like my younger sister.
I have done some research on BDD, and I found that sufferers normally focus on one minor or imagined flaw... if this is the case with me, then my flaws that I obsess over are:
my skin - I've had spots for about 4 1/2 years now
my curly hair - I hate, hate HATE this
my nose - which is very big for a girl, and has a bump on it

I can honestly say that I am obsessed with my appearance, which I suppose makes me vain, but how can I be vain when I hate how I look? I mean, I avoid having my photo taken, usually offering to take it instead, I either always check my appearence in mirrors or avoid them completely and if I hear the word "spots" or "acne" at school I feel like everyone in the room is staring at me, even after I have checked and found that they are actually not. Often, I don't want to go out in case I have to have my picture taken and on the rare occasion that a boy shows any interest in me I always assume that it's for a dare. I'm the kind of girl who - on the rare occasion that her facebook pic is actually of her, as opposed to a flower or a group photo - will take 20 photos of herself to put as a facebook pic, then delete all but two, and then change the pic after an hour anyway. It doesn't help that I am not that photogenic, so whan even I can say that I look OK, someone will take a picture, and I seem to be starting at the Hunchback of Notre Dame. A big turning point for me was when a little while ago when I was in the changing rooms of my local New Look, glanced in the mirror and the side view of my nose made me - no exaggeration - nearly vomit from shame. I just couldn't believe my own ugliness.

My obsession with my looks and fear of uglines is not helped by my peers, who appear to fall into two categories:
My friend Lily who jokingly says that I have a "bulbous nose", a boy in my class called Nick who tells me I am the spitting image of Susan Boyle and used to call me "bubble nose" and my friend Kelly who - when we play argue - likes to tell me that I look like SuBo as well.
AND
My friend Ameera who, if while in a rare mood when I feel like talking about this I tell her about feeling ugly, tells me with a sigh and a shake of the head that I am being silly, and Lily who when in a sensible mood gives me the same flippantly unsympathetic reaction. Both also claim that I am a dead ringer for Kelly Brook.

Basically I feel that my ugliness is either being cruelly rubbed in my face or is being denied without the smallest thought that perhaps I'm not just being silly or that people's comments are not helping me at all.

So, firstly, do you think that I maybe have BDD, or am I just vain and melodramatic?
And secondly, what do I do? I am so miserable that I spend hours a week looking up ways to change my appearence, all to no avail
I'm sorry if I'm being melodramatic... but honestly, this is how I feel. I know it's a such a stupid and terrible thing to be obsessed with, but my looks have upset me for such a long time.

Talk to your parents and try to get them to take you to a doctor or therapist who would be able to diagnose and treat you.

Im a 15 yr old guy and i think i just self diagnosed myself with BDD after reading this question. I ALWAYS look in mirrors and feel so so so ugly all the time when actually i am not. Its just i look at my hair and its moppy but it looks horrible to me sometimes from a side view and stuff I bet you are beautiful. You just have to tell yourself that. Most guys in my class look really good and look like they dont even try and look good but me, i have to try A LOT and straighten my hair and put mirrors back to back to see how it looks and stuff its awful.

Okay chill you are being melodramatic and letting your appearance take over your life. You have listed tons of things you think are wrong with you here but none which are good! Everyone has their good and bad points and you quite clearly are stuck in a rut and spiralling downwards! Unfortunately if you do go on to your friends all the time about your appearance they will get the impression that this is all that matters to you and yes unfortunately you will seem very vain! Focus on self confidence as this is what makes you beautiful, there are tons of people out there that have flaws but everyone just sees them as these beautiful bubbly people because they are confident and happy with who they are. Seriosuly this is what you need to do. Look in a mirror and find your good points and focus on them next time your made to feel down about yourself. Don't constantly feel the need to have others reassure you about your appearance, confidence and beauty come from within and if your "friends" really have said you look like susan boyle then this is them identifying your lack of self confidence and playing on it because in most cases, when people can bring someone elses self confidence down, theirs will go up..Genuinely though imagine if someone constantly wanted reassurance off you and wanted you to tell them all the time that they weren't ugly etc you would get very annoyed and eventually just give up trying to convince them otherwise! Don't obsess over photos either as how you look in a photo depends on loads of different things! Just smile and be confident in photos and dont over analyse them all the time oh and stop taking photos of yourself to go on facebook! Focus on being happy and self confident and you'll leave all the other image obsessed girls behind and find your much happier seriously.

First off, I don't think you have BDD. A lot of people have problems with how they look every now and then, and that's normal. When your physical appearance hinders you from living your life, and keeps you from doing things, then it may be BDD. I think your problem is a mixture of your friends / class mates being cruel and picking on you, and you feeling insecure.

And now for the advice:
Have a talk with your friends. If they're your friends, then they shouldn't be saying things that hurt your feelings. If other people who aren't your friends are making rude comments, sometimes you should ignore it, and some times you have to shove back. I had a boy in school who called me Pinocchio because of my nose, and one day he told me to 'tell a lie'. I told him he wasn't fat - and he never made another rude comment again.

If you want to change how you look for YOURSELF, then you certainly should. A big part of confidence comes from how you see yourself, and if you feel like you want to change something then I don't see anything wrong with that. You said you hate your hair? Flat irons are cheap, I've had the same $20 wet-2-straight I got from wal-mart for three years. If your skin is bad, start up a skin care regimen. Exfoliate once a week, use a cleanser and oil free moisturizer daily.

Regardless of if you have BDD or not, you might want to see a therapist. I know it sounds odd, but sometimes it's really helpful to have someone to voice your concerns to who will listen and not just nod or say you're being 'silly'. The truth is, you're not being vain or melodramatic, and I highly doubt you have BDD. You just need to shift your focus off the bad things. Don't study yourself in the mirror religiously and pick out every flaw.
