Runaway Bride
|
IMDB rating: 5.20 Plot: Ike Graham, New York columnist, writes his text always at the last minute. This time, a drunken man in his favourite bar tells Ike about Maggie Carpenter, a woman who always flees from her grooms in the last possible moment. Ike, who does not have the best opinion about females anyway, writes an offensive column without researching the subject thoroughly. The next day, Ike gets fired by his publisher (and former wife), because he went too far and faked the facts, which real journalists don't do. Ike's only way back into the business now is to do a fact-based report on Maggie and her upcoming fourth wedding attempt, which Ike predicts to fail again. So, as he circles her like a vulture his prey-to-be, Maggie's opinion of Ike sinks below zero. Not only is Ike waiting for her to fail again but the whole town is poking fun at Maggie about her mistakes. But that is a point which Ike doesn't like. |

Should I just cave in and see The Notebook? Would I like it?
I absolutely HATE romance movies. The only ones I've liked are Ten Things I Hate About You (because it's about teenage love, which I think is cute) and 13 Going On 30 (because it was funny).
I really hated Runaway Bride (ew, the two actors in that movie were fugly) and How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days (it had WAY better potential than what was given).
Given my choices, do you think I would like The Notebook?
The only other romance movie I've seen is You've Got Mail, and I thought it was so-so. The story was cute, but I'm not into the whole... older people falling in love thing.
It was actually very good, you should see it.

98% of girls like the movie. The other 2% play World of Warcraft with the nerdy boys at school.

How do I deal with neighbors who think I am too noisy?
I moved into an apartment close to campus a few months ago that is surprisingly not predominantly students. Within my first week here I stayed up late with a friend watching tv. Now, in this case I will admit, it was pretty loud. I had just moved from somewhere without adjacent neighbors, so it slipped my mind to keep it down. My downstairs neighbors came up the next day and told me to keep it down and I did not mind at all. However, in the following few weeks they came up multiple times to tell us to turn off our music. One time it was 8:00 on a Friday night, and another was at about 11:00 on a Sunday morning, when they actually hunted my roommate down in the laundry room to tell her. Every time we politely apologize and turn it down. Now, they haven't been up for a while until today they left a note on our door. It said that we have been stressing them out by listening to music late and even just talking with friends. They also called us selfish and wanted to know if we thought it was funny. Now, we aren't loud people. We listen to music and play video games and board games and talk to friends. We have never had (and never will) have a loud party. I'm not a jerk either, I want them to be happy, but at the same time I do not want to drastically change my lifestyle. What can I do?
Preemptive answers for you-
Yes, I have a subwoofer, but it has been turned off since the first incident.
I often go to bed around 2.
I can not hear our music from the next room.
Neither the stereo nor tv are in a bedroom. They are against a wall with no adjacent neighbors.
The speakers and tv are not on the ground.
Use headphones.

Just carry on with what you're doing.
It's your home too and you are well within your rights to chat with friends, play games and music. You've made changes to try to help them already and that's fine. They will just have to deal with it.
You're neighbours seem to be being rather petty. If they complain again. Just let them know you've made changes and that it's your home, if you want to listen to music you can. There's nothing more you can do.

find out the rules to your apartment. i remember my moms old apartment rules were no loud music/loud tv before 11am and no later than 10 pm. if there are no rules, they have no reason to complain and you can tell them to go eff themselves. if there are rules however, follow them. if they still complain when you're following the rules, explain that you're allowed to listen as loud as you want during that time. easy.

Ya know what? you are not being rude at all. For 1, you are in your own apt, and 2 you have made changes and it was not good enough for them. me and my BF stay up every night til around 3 or 4. We have an arrangement with our landlord...he says keep it down during the week, cuz he has to work, and during the weekends he does not care how loud the music, we do what we want. Now, your neighbors are not your landlord/manager, unless he confronts you with it, don't even worry about the neighbors. We have had the cops called on us before, we had our music on..not even loud(and only 4 people in the house), and ignorant people will still call..because they're dumb. I'm sorry, but i'm enjoying my life, and you should do the same, what do they want you do do? Tiptoe everywhere, and whisper..I say screw em. Ignore them.(turn the sub woofer back on)

Maybe try putting something between the floor and your speakers. I know you say they are not on floor but maybe an extra mat to absorb sound may help? Also most apartments have in their lease times of the day when it is expectational to be louder than normal. I know my last place said that any noise to be heard outside of your apartment should be done between 10am and 7pm. They asked that you didn't vacuum after 7pm as not to disturb anyone living underneath you. Playing music at 11 in the morning is fine it would be different if it was 11 at night. If you have a noise exception in your lease and they complain during those times point that out to them.

There is an old saying - "one man's ceiling is another man's floor" - apparently most of those answering you either have not heard this before, or are not very nice [to avoid words that I will not use]. You have some choices - try all that you can to be as quiet as possible, or look for housing elsewhere. The stereo, TV, and whatever else that is against a wall will carry sound down to the apt below and carry up as well. All of this is part of co existing in an apt setting...

I'm wondering if your neighbours are ultra sensitive to noise and are not use to it (did the previous people creep around or was hardly there?) and I'm also wondering if, even though you've quietened down, you're still making some noise?
I lived with somebody who didn't close doors, she slammed them shut. I had to have a word with her about it and she honestly didn't realise what she was doing. She stopped slamming the door shut, unfortunately she pushed it shut but strongly which was causing just as much noise as the slamming.
I know you say that the telly can't be heard in the room next door but what about downstairs? We can't hear our telly in the kitchen which is next door to the lounge but we can hear it upstairs. What I suggest you do, next time they are in, is put the telly on at a volume suitable for you and then pop downstairs and see what it's like in their apartment. If you can't hear it, ask them to help you solve the problem and next time the music / telly is too loud they are to get you so you can hear it yourself. This way, they won't be "exaggerating" the problem and you will honestly hear what they can hear.
If they do knock and complain and after you have gone downstairs and honestly can't hear anything or faintly, gently explain to them that it's not loud and that you have done what you can and you now consider the matter closed.
They will most probably complain more but to be on the safe side, contact your letting agent and inform them of the problem you are experiencing. This will forewarn them in case the people downstairs decide to complain to them.
Good luck.
