How to make a two tier birthday cake?
Hello,
I was wondering if anybody could help me, i am making my mother a 50th birthday cake and wanted to make a two tier one! As it would be for a party which is for around 100 people and i thought this would be easier rather than trying to find a big oven to fit a large single tier cake in, although i know not every one will eat the cake.
I was wondering if anyone could give me a rough idea of sizes, i was thinking maybe 12" on the bottom and 10 or 8" on the top? I've looked through a lot of websites and youtube videos and heard a lot about fondant icing? But how do i apply this and is this the best icing to use for a birthday cake? Do i use frosting underneath, what is this? Ha, i thought it was just butter icing?
And now how to assemble the two tiers, i have seen a lot about cutting small layer out of the bottom cake and placing some kind of piping through to make sure the top cake doesn't sink in? I cannot remember what it was called though, maybe something starting with D? Am i correct in thinking that i would need to cover the bottom tier with the fondant icing first and then use the piping and apply the top cake?
If someone could help me i would be so grateful, and i'm sure my mum would too!!
Thanks. x
hi,
i like baking and yes, i think that you can use frosting for the rest, but fondant icing on the top of the bottom cake

You will need more than a small two tiered cake for 100 people. Your best bet would be to order a full sheet cake, which will serve 70 2x2 inch pieces. You can get one plain, and do all the icing and decorations yourself.

Fondant is easy, i use it pretty often. you can get the recipe on www.wilton.com. the site is full of recipes, project ideas & tips, etc. You do need to use icing between the fondant & icing, and buttercream icing is the best...also found on the site. as long as the cakes aren't mad heavy or super fluffy, you won't have a problem with one sinking deep into the other.
also, if you're having a problem with the fondant cracking (happens a lot in the dry winter air), mix crisco vegetable shortening in little by little.
hope i helped!!

the fondant icing is rather simple.........roll out to the size of the length+height and then the width+height. it is best to stick the fondant on with either icing or jam! roll it out really thin but be careful when lifting it because it tears. don't roll to many times because it will crack.
i would make a large square cake on the bottom and a smaller one on pillars on top of that covered in white icing and either a picture or writing on the top. then pipe round the edge wit the star shaped nozzle.
this method is pretty simple my 12 year old daughter made me a cake using this method,
happy making

The Draconian Conundrum?
This is a little short story I did for fun...Enjoy! BTW: This is copy-righted. Please don't steal this.
Dracia Camblla placed her head through the bars of the cage, letting her hands feel their ways toward her face. Her chestnut-brown hair was entangled with twigs and leaves, and her emerald eyes, which were now a misty green, searched for nothing as the busy people of Trytee bustled about. It was a strange environment for her; she never had stepped foot outside her home before, and now here she was, locked in a cage somewhere.
She was blind, yes, but she saw things people have never seen, and never will see by the rate of their technological progress. She saw dragons breathing putrid fire on a castle top, brave knights in their armor searching for their beloved, princesses of fairy tales with long, blonde hair and blue eyes. She heard the wisp of the wind as it sailed across great plains, a woman singing an old ballad from the days of yore, the silence before a storm. What she saw was beauty in its own master design, never ceasing to create such wonders the world had forgotten over time.
She still held her imagination firm even though she was kidnapped by a mysterious man. It was was of keeping her sanity, if that makes any sense. In order to survive and not think the worst of her given situation, she imagined she was somewhere far away where there were no people so cruel like her captor. Her captor....it sounded so foreign to her. In all her studies, she never has heard of a man kidnapping a little girl. Maybe it was for her own protection, like many other things such as reading and writing.
So, here Dracia, or as she likes to be called, Draci, was, sitting in her cage when she heard a voice call out a greeting. "Hail, Turget!" It was a man, and a pretty young one at that. His voice was strong, demanding, yet at the same time subjective to other voices. He had a sense of urgency to his pace, making a straight beeline for the captor who was presumably named Turget.
Turget raised his hand in the sign of a formal greeting, "May the Draconian Fire blaze in your heart."
"And yours."
Draci cocked her head in question; what is the Draconian Fire, and who is the mysterious man? Paying no heed to the girl, Turget continued on, "So..what'll it be?" He tugged on his short beard as if in thought, and tapped his foot in time with the music playing in the background. "The Dracia Waltz..." he murmured, recognizing the tune.
The customer walked around the cage, noting all the flaws and perfections of Draci mentally. After a few minutes of deep consideration, he straightened up, smoothing his jacket, and said, "I'd say 40 shackles. Nothing more."
Turget cursed under his breath; he knew there was no chance in bargaining, the customer knew what he wanted and wouldn't back down. "Oh, fine." He reluctantly agreed, shaking hands with the customer, who grinned mischeviously in satifaction.
A sudden jerk from the cage left Draci sprawling across the small area, and she could tell by the heavy breathing and grunting that some men were attempting to move the cage.CLICK! The caged prisoner heard the opening to the cage pop open, and before she knew what she was doing, Dracia dived out of there and sprinted to the nearest exit away from the men.
"Stop her!" she heard a voice screaming from across the room.
Before she had time to cross through the doorway, thick, strong arms wrapped around her waist and carried her away. The person who was carrying her was heading upstairs, she could tell, and was gaining speed as well as ground away from the crowd of people who screamed after them.
Grrr...dumb auto-correct thought that a word I put in there was innapropriate, and bloakced it out.
hmm its good, the word draconian reminds me of tracy hickman's dragonlance saga, so i can imagine this story very well, i like your description of the girl and everything
you have a good work here, keep it up !

totally overrated. it actually said nothing and was instead just a string of scenarios with no ultimate message. also, having a diverse cast does not mean you have a multicultural story. if hollywood wanted to embrace a truly multicultural film then brokeback mountain would have won. that film did portray a story from a point of view not seen before in a major studio release.

That is a very easy question. I'm a movie buff. I'm really into classics like Casablanca. I can't honestly say I've seen all of these movies, But I've seen quite a few of them.
No Country for Old Men
in my opinion, is not only the worst Oscar Winning Best Picture. But is one of the WORST movies I've ever seen in my life. That movie made no bit of since. The plot had more flaws than a loney toons cartoon.
There was no real point to the whole thing. The whole time it feels like you're being drawn into something that gonna blow your mind, but at the end, nothind. And don't even get me started on that ending. Usually when I see an ending that I don't uderstand, I have to figure it out by any means necessary. But when I saw that ending, I didn't even care. I was just glad it was over.
I like to study movies. So I usually watch any movie at least twice and it's usually better. So I watched it again. That movie was even worst the second time. They should've just named that movie Three Hours You'll Never Get Back. (It felt like ten)
Just my opinion though. I appologize for the rant. lol And if you actually liked that movie. To each his own. But not for me.

'LOTR: Return of The Cash' is pretty rank.
'How Green Was My Valley' famously beat 'Citizen Kane' to the Best Picture nod that year.
But hands down the cheesiest, flimsiest movie ever to get best picture has to Rocky. I don't have a problem with people loving the movie - I mean how much sheer joy would be lost if people couldn't do their Stallone impressions by shouting "Adrieennneeee!!!" and lolling their head from side to side - but it's not art, it's not well acted and it has all the depth of a Lifetime movie.
What's all the more disturbing is not only did Rocky beat Scorsese's Taxi Driver that year, it also beat 'All The President's Men' and the Sidney Lumet-directed 'Network'.
Rocky is a byword for big, dumb cheesy movie gets lucky.

IMDB rating: 4.70 Plot: Earl and Hank have only one thing in common: they're both L.A.P.D. rejects. One just got kicked out, the other can't even get in. After confronting each other on opposite sides of the law during a traffic stop that escalates out of control, these two luckless individuals end up partnered as lowly security guards. Despite being damned to the lowest rung of the law enforcement ladder, Earl and Hank uncover a sophisticated smuggling operation led by Nash and his band of thugs. When Earl and Hank get their hands on some hot property, they go on the run from, first the bad guys, then the L.A.P.D.—led by Lt. Washington and Detective McDuff. Does shutting down Big 3 put our national security at risk?
It's easy to say "let 'em fail", but what will happen to our national security (especially since we are still at war) if we lose our manufacturing capabilities? The auto companies played a crucial role during WWII. If we just let them shut down now, this would have serious consequenses for our national defense. I personally don't think the Big 3 should get any bailout money unless bad management gets the heave-ho and new management and the UAW renegotiate their unsustainable compensation packages. The times, they are a-changin'.
As an auto worker I am appalled at the ignorance and disinformation being displayed in regard to this situation. FYI: in the last UAW-GM contract, the UAW already gave GM the ability to hire new workers at $17 and a number of other concessions. The Japanese companies operating in the US pay wages comparable to our present wages. Their savings is in legacy costs. They are so new in this country that they have no retirees to pay. They also don't have health insurance costs with their Japanese retirees, we are the only industrial nation without some kind of national health care. So their nation's health care system pays retiree health care.
As for vehicles, many Americans are still parroting the old 1970's
refrain that the. Big Three are not building the kind of cars that Americans want. We have rushed dozens of new gas efficient and hybrid vehicles to market. We are almost ready to sell electric cars. And, don't start thinking we have models people want but lousy quality. Toyota set an industry record last year for recalls. Today, US quality rivals the best in the world. The reason the bailout is necessary is because of the credit crunch and the public's reluctance to make major purchases in tough economic times, we are not able to sell the cars we have built. The Japanese automakers are suffering the same as we are.
Now, someone had the nerve to suggest that my wages be cut since anyone can do my job. I am a skilled trades worker with a college degree and I have finished a four year apprenticeship. Unlike "Joe the Plumber", I finished my apprenticeship and have my journeyman's card. If I worked outside the auto industry, in my trade, I would earn more than any $20 an hour.
The American automakers need the bailout to get through these tough economic times that they were in no way responsible for. If the auto industry leaves America, in order to buy a car you will have to give money to someone who may not like us very much.

Obviously you don't know the process......if we let them fail, they won't just up and leave..
more than likely the debt holders continue operations and keep the company going (with major changes in management of course)

I say pay the UAW employees a normal wage like everyone else, say $15/hour should be about right for unskilled labor. $20/hour for more skilled personell is ok, but this ridiculous $35/hour for doing something a 12 year old could easily do is insane. Who can stay in business like that?

Bethany J | Nov 17, 2008
Actually it does. Until this Country gets its manufacturing base back, we cannot pull out of our financial woes. Should the Big 3 go under, you will see this country spiral into a depression folks, it is just that simple. Yes the UAW has their "claws" into these companies. Until these companies can operate on a level playing field, they will not survive........with or without a bridge loan............LOAN people, LOAN, not a bail out.
dlk | Nov 17, 2008
Not giving 25 billion dollars to the auto companies is not "letting them fail". They will find a solution by themselves. The majority of the country sees what is being done with the bank bailout money and is against bailing out the auto makers. Don't believe the scare tactics that are being put out there.

Yes I would say it does, and if they go bankrupt and try to reorganize who will buy a vehicle from a bankrupt company that may not be able to honor the warranty?
toledojeeper | Nov 17, 2008
Automobile manufacturing is a vital component of our national defense. Only a few generations ago America was shocked into World War 2 by the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. American automakers responded by turning their industrial might toward the defense of our nation. During World War 2 General Motors was a major supplier of US military hardware, supplies and equipment. Putting these resources in the hands of Japanese, Koreans, or Germans makes the United States extremely vulnerable; both during wartime and during peacetime.
Dmytrovich | Nov 17, 2008
Just like the airline industry, let them figure it out themselves. Survival of the fittest. Bail out the people not the industry.
Light rails removed in L.A. by automakers to sell more cars. How irresponsible. How costly. How unethical. They deserve to fail miserably.

what do u people think of my little poemy thing, its about a girl i like
?
before u start, im not an emo or anything
i was just not doing very much this evening and i remember a ts eliot poem i read a while ago and it got me thinking and i wrote this.
i stand alone, united and clear in my goals,
the past is set, the present is alive, and the future is as bright as the sun.
but then a change, that threatens to bring all of that down,
or complete it.
a beam of light which has always been a part of my universe,
althout sometimes hidden
Persephone.
once unreachable seems closer than ever.
fear,
fear of not knowing,
fear of failure,
hope,
hope of what might be
hope of sucsess.
the beam of light, grows ever more beautiful everytime i glance it,
stronger, growing, flawless in everyway.
i feel so close, but know that i am so far,
i can see what might be, but dare not dream any more
as a dream lasts a lifetime
and even a second seems to long.
so close
now the time has come, i feel the time is right,
i feel i have come to a turning point on this long road.
To have squeezed my universe into a ball
my past my present...my future,
To roll it toward some overwhelming question
to hope that it is recieved and not lost,
and that it should be returned complete,
with the path of the future eteched in its surface
how hope i do not have to say
"That is not what I meant at all.
That is not it, at all."
for a journey without an end is a damned voyage
but a journey with an end is a fairy tale
and who ever heard of a fairy tale with a sad ending
a vision of beauty i see every day
and think of every night,
glowing face, and eyes such deep brown
Till a human voice wake us, and we drown.
tell me what u think/ what u make of it
have a great night everybody
well i did say i took inspitation from a ts eliot poem, i wont deny that, his poem really, like made an inpact, and the thoughts that provoked led to this

Ricochet

IMDB rating: 5.70 Plot: Rookie Los Angeles cop Nick Styles is at a Los Angeles street fair, where hit man Earl Talbot Blake pulls a double cross on some drug dealers, killing four men. Minutes later, Nick shoots Blake in the knee, and Blake is grabbed by Nick's partner and best friend Larry Doyle. Nick becomes the focus of the media, thanks to an amateur cameraman's footage of Nick disarming Blake. Over the next few years, Nick's career takes off: he's offered a job in the district attorney's office, and his hip media style keeps him in the public eye. Nick marries a woman named Alice and they go on to have two daughters named Lisa and Monica. While Blake is in prison, he vows revenge on Nick. When Blake comes up for parole, he orchestrates a bloody escape — which includes faking his own death. Blake doesn't want Nick dead. He just wants Nick to suffer in spades. He wants to ruin Nick's life as completely as possible, and then have Nick sent to prison for murder so Nick will know how Blake feels. Blake begins his vendetta by killing city councilman U. B. Farris and planting evidence to make everyone think Nick and Farris are running an underage pornography ring. Blake then kidnaps Nick, forces him to take drugs and have sex with a prostitute, videotapes the whole thing, and then releases Nick. Nick tells everyone that it was Blake who kidnapped him, but everyone refuses to believe Nick because everyone thinks Blake is dead. That night, Blake breaks into Nick's house, and makes a threatening videotape with Lisa, Monica, and an ax in it, but Blake didn't actually do anything to Lisa and Monica. Nick is then suspended from the DA's office, with everyone thinking that Nick is mentally ill because he keeps saying that Blake is still alive. Blake then begins the final phase of his vendetta — he kills Larry and frames Nick for it. Blake also links Nick to misappropriation of public funds, specifically, the funds he's supposed to be raising for a children's center in a building at the base of the Watts tower. Nick is forced to turn to his childhood friend, gang leader Odessa, for help in clearing his name and stopping Blake once and for all. |

Why do my cats shake?
Three of my cats - Secret, Vido, and Ricochet - seem to shake a lot. They're outside right now, but even when they were inside where it's warm they would shake. Secret is the oldest, and one of the older brothers of the other two. His brother is perfectly fine, but Secret seems to shake a lot. Sometimes he's just shaking, other times he tenses up and trembles. I brought him inside today and he still shakes. He's always done this, and he's always been sort of afraid of people unless we bring him in. Vido, the middle sister, was really loud and would shake a lot when she was born. Sometimes she does it now, but it's usually when I pick her up, which is hard to do because she doesn't really like people unless she's inside. Ricochet, the youngest, shakes a lot too. She was born near the end of summer, so she couldn't have been cold, but she always shakes. Ricochet isn't really afraid of people, either. And I just realized today that all of them are siblings and not half-siblings. Their mother and father, who are brother and sister, never shakes. All of Mittens's kittens, the mother of their half-siblings and their aunt, don't shake.
All three of them have short fur, and it's pretty odd colored. Secret has short brownish-orangish-skin-coloredish fur. It's hard to describe. Vido has dark silver short fur with dark gray stripes. Ricochet has black and brown short fur that really makes her stand out.
Is the shaking genetic or something? Nothing has ever really happened to them that hasn't happened to the others. All of them are outside with the others, and none of them are really attacked by anything. Well, Jet sometimes goes after Secret and Prowler, but they always end up fine. Vido is never attacked by the other females, and Ricochet is never attacked by her littermates and mother. Is it genetic or no?
I'm afraid Ghat taking them to the vet is out of the question because as soon as I asked my bitch of a mother, she immediately said no because she's too fugging cheap to 'waste money on a shaking cat' so I'm apparently the only one that actually gives half a damn about them. I care about them more than I care about my own family. So yeah... I really want to take one of tem to the vet, but considering I'm only 14, I can't.
By the way, Secret was born maybe two or three years ago, Vido maybe a year or two, and Ricochet last year.
If both parents had the recessive trait for whatever disease is causing them to shake, it could very well be genetic. I believe that your cats have the trait for some kind of neurological disease. Ask your vet if they can do test to see exactly which one it is.

I dont want to scare you but I had a kitty who shook sometimes as he was just laying on the couch. I never thought anything of it. he was a strictly indoor cat and was 1 year and 2 months old. He all of the sudden got VERY SKINNY and very sick so I took him in asap...and he passed away that day. I had to put him to sleep cause it turns out he had FIV, feline infectious perotonitis. It only occurs in 10% of cats that are 1-2 years old. I think you should get their shaking checked out because my doctor said i should have told him about it. Good luck

How can I stop illegal animal trading?
What kind of work can I get into if I want to stop people from illegally trading animals? I am 18 and I have always wanted to help animals in what I do for a living.. And I was wondering what I should study in college or where I can even go to start. It seems to be something of a cop job, should I first look into police academy, or what?
The only way to stop illegal animal trading is to come up with a law that enables harsher punishment so that more people will think twice before doing animal trade illegally. A job that helps with animal is Animal Cruelty Investigator, Humane Society Police Officer, Animal Control Worker, or Animal Cop. If you want to learn how to get into one of these jobs go to www.ehow.com
and type in the search bar "how to become an animal cop?"
Here is how to save animals.
Step 1) Report any instances of animal cruelty or neglect that you may witness. Neglect includes dogs that are constantly chained up or left alone in a yard or cats that are pretty much left to fend for themselves.
Step 2) Report stray or injured animals to your local animal shelter. If possible, pick up the animal yourself and call around to see if a rescue or no-kill shelter might have room before turning the pet in to a city shelter. There are alternatives to city shelters including boarding facilities that will charge lower rates for rescued pets until homes are found for them and people who foster pets. See article on stray animal rescue (bottom link in Resources below).
Step 3) Adopt pets from shelters and rescues before buying from a breeder, and never purchase a dog or cat from a pet store. There are two great websites for finding your dream pet: Petfinder.com and Adopt a Pet.com. Both list thousands of dogs, cats, rabbits and more up for adoption throughout North America. Just put in your zip code and what type of pet you're looking for-it's that easy.
Step 4) Spay or neuter your pet. This is first and foremost for controlling pet overpopulation.
Step 5) Avoid purchasing products that were tested on animals and don't donate to organizations that do unnecessary animal testing (see Resources below).
Step 6) Don't support the fur industry, reduce the amount of leather you use and refuse to buy products made from real ivory.
Step 7) Don't engage in or support hunting for sport.
Step
Don't attend circuses or rodeos that abuse their animals. Attend circuses that don't use live animals at all.
Step 9) Limit or eliminate your consumption of meat, and when purchasing meat opt for free range and organic. Don't eat veal or foie gras; both are obtained by cruel methods.
Step 10) Purchase cage-free eggs and organic dairy products, and if you've done your research and are ready to make the commitment, switch to a vegan diet, which is good for your health, animals and the environment.
Step 11) Donate food, supplies, money and your time and support to local shelters/rescues and national or world animal protection organizations; encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same (see Resources below).
Step 12) Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper about pet overpopulation and unwanted, abused and neglected animals. Bring their attention to local pet stores that sell dogs (the overwhelming majority are from puppy mills).
Step 13) Contact your elected representatives and urge them to sponsor stronger laws to protect animals from cruelty (including those on factory farms and those that are hunted) and to increase punishment for animal abusers.
Step 14) Share your love for animals and how to properly care for them with children and enlighten adults about abusive practices that we are generally kept in the dark about, so that one day it will be a kinder world for animals.
Step 15) Help animals by clicking daily on websites such as The Animal Rescue Site, Care 2's Race for Pets in Need, Care 2's Race to Save Baby Seals, Free Kibble and Free KibbleKat. It's absolutely free! You can also search the Web and help rescue pets at the same time by using Dogpile (see Resources below).

What is the best basketball shoe.?
The Kobe 5's
The LeBron 7's
or some Adidas shoes such as the young guns or ts cut creator
please help!!!!!
Try out Michael Jordans show line. They are great, but if you can't find any, go with Adidas. They help especially when you are doing quick stopping and have padding in the toe for when you stop too quickly and your toes smash together at the front.
