I am a manager in an upscale clothing store that has been suffering tremendous losses due to theft. We have had quite a few grab-and-runs, along with the usual dressing room theft. We also have several "professional" thieves come in who supposedly wear girdles under their outfits and stuff them with merchandise. We currently only have ink tags, which thieves can too easily be removed with a magnet or lighters. Does anyone have words of advice, whether it be state-of-the-art censors, or just approaches used to deter/scare of shoplifters? Thanks :)

Grrrrr, I hate thievery….. Some random ideas:

Hire a plain-clothes store detective. If you’re "upscale", I’m assuming you have the budget for this (especially if your losses are "tremendous" as you put it).

Look into electronic tags, prepare to invest in the detection hardware that goes along with it.

Strip-search all those girdle-wearing thieves who come into the store. I’d be glad to help. Call me at 1-800-Bend-Over-B*itch LOL

Post signs in store and dressing room areas that clearly indicate store’s view that shoplifting behavior is criminal, is being monitored, will be prosecuted, etc. Prepare to back up those words with actions.

If I think of anything else, I’ll post it. I don’t envy you. I hate thievery.

Good night, and good luck. Col. Kurtz

An adequately staffed department will deter most thieves. The sales personnel should greet everyone that comes into the department. You should never have one person on duty. An employee presence lets them know someone is there to assist and/or protect the store’s merchandise.

Prosecute all shoplifters including employees. If you have a reputation for letting people off the hook, the word will get around to the thieves.
