here is the deal..my family and i were having a wake today at our house and someone left the front door open and due to the door being open, my cat got outside and went under our front porch, and our front porch is pretty closed in, i live in colorado and at the moment it is 2 degrees outside and snowing, it has been snowing for 2 days now so there is a lot of it, my question is how long can he be outside for before he starts to freeze? and any suggestions on how to get him out?? like i said our porch is closed in with wood but there are small little openings that he can get in and out of…he is just not coming out please help asap!!

You could call animal control and they have a stick with a rope thing idk what its called but they can get that around his neck and drag him out for you.

Well, cats are made to live outdoors, but still that’s pretty bad.
I would suggest getting some food (preferable something that smells relatively tasty.)
and leave it at the opening.
If you have any left over meat (chicken, steak) or any lunch meat (balogna, ect) then
that would be ideal too. Call him, and when he starts eating, snag him!

In my opinion,
when he gets cold he will eventually come out, try to put can food outside or tuna fish so he can smell it. and just wait, try to be really quiet and try not to make any noise, that might scare your pet.

He will be okay for a couple of hours before he starts getting really cold. Keep an eye and make sure he doesn’t run off somewhere else. Hold some food out to bait him, something really tasty like canned tuna or cooked meat, the meat may not be the best for his health, but he will be okay this one time to get him out of there.

Once he comes near you, don’t jump at him or try to grab him suddenly or he’ll just run away again. Have someone there with you, and while he eats out of your hand, slowly try to take hold of him. Clip a collar on him, hold him, anything.

Usually cats will find there way out of tight situations. I don’t know how tight yours is though. Try food……HOT SMELLY FOOD…… LIKE MEAT OR CHICKEN. He’ll come out if he’s hungry.
If all else fails call the fire department. Heck if they can come down for a cat in a tree, well I guess they’ll come and rescue your kitty too.

Start by making a trail so-to-speak of the blankets and or items that he or she normally sleeps or lays on in the house. Place those in the small opening that he or she went through. Cats and all animals love laying and being with items that they have layed in or played with in the past. They have a great sense of smell for them. Also, scatter a bunch of its favorite treats to eat. Good luck.

I call my cat usually by making either kissing noises or sucking my tongue noises. It imitates a mouse and just about any cat will respond to it. Also try having some of it food on hand. If you feed your cat wet food then heat it up a bit. Dry food you can somewhat make a trail with. Also how long your cat can stand outside in the cold depends on breed and if it’s long hair or short hair but I advise no more than an hour at the most.

Also my cat gets out the house and if it’s too cold she’ll jump back in like ‘aw heck no. It’s too cold out there.’ So it is possible that he is in the house someplace warm. Also if you have a basement or cellar he could be down there as well. Luckily you have a fence so your cat couldn’t have taken a stroll through the neighborhood (unless he got through those small holes). But call animal control if you can’t find him within the hour. I hope that you find your cat safe and warm.

Look for posts about Poupon – that is my cat that went missing and has lots of extra tips. The main thing is your cat will NOT recognize you outside. This is because his environment has changed so much he feels like he’s in a dream and so you are just a dream character – some slightly familiar person who is completely out of context in this new dream like place. So he may run and hide from you.

Consider that cats sense more with nose and sound than with eyes, and noises and smells are altered when they are outdoors. He might as well be on mars.

Now follow all the tips on the website – choose the indoor cat pages. He is unlikely to roam, unless chased. Mine never left my deck – I checked his paws afterwards and he didn’t walk anywhere. I think he just slept.

You can build him a shelter with things that smell familiar to him – a polar fleece throw that smells like you is perfect. You can sew it into a roll with a big enough opening (held open with a big embroidery hoop or some such) and he’ll stay plenty warm. I had a foster squirrel that kept toasty in one of those! Don’t offer much food – you want him hungry. Check the shelter often. Call at regular hours. Prop your door open for a while with food in the room inside ( maybe with something to block all but the bottom to keep the cold out)
