Chances of being accepted into UCLA/UCSD/UCI?
I’m a junior in high school and my grades have really gone down this year. Im afraid of the impact it’ll have on my chances of getting into these schools. What are my chances respectively for each school?

(do they look at freshman grades?) my grades are as follows:
sophomore year:
ap euro: a/a (4 on the ap test)
math analysis/trig honors: c/c
english honors: a/a
physics honors: a/a
spanish 2: a/a
academic decathalon team: a/a [i recieved 2 individual awards including 5th place in county, and our school recieved two first place awards]

junior year:
ap calculus: d (im planning on retaking this next year first semester)
photo as art: a
english honors: b
ap us history: b
spanish 3: (a or b depending on final)
ap biology: (b or c depending on final)
chemistry honors: a

next semester im hoping to bring ap us and english to a’s and calculus to a c

as far as extracirriculars go:
- i volunteer at the hospital every saturday for 4 hours which started this past summer
-i’m high school liason for my community teen advisory board
-im founder of the national beta club charter at my school (started this year)
-i am vice president of the vegetarian club (1 year)
-im creative director for the heart to heart club (where we make cards to give out to ill patients)
-ive been in model united nations for 2 year, and i am director of publicity for it; ive won 4 awards in it, as well as a school award; i’m planning on going to uc berkeley for a conference next month
-i dont know if this counts but i did the academic pentathalon in 6th grade and won 7 awards
-i was in peer assistance leadership class for 8th and 9th grade, and i won a lion’s club award for 2nd place for recongnition for service to my community
-i’ve been in party for the planet club and spanish club for 3 years now

my sat score is 2160, but im hoping to bring that up to a 2200-2250

senior year im planning on taking ap psych, ap statistics, academic decathalon, ap lit, ap spanish 4, and ap economy

im worried mostly because of my first semester junior year grades, can anyone help me? what do you think?

People will tell you you have to have an astronomical GPA to even be considered, but that was just not the case for me. I did okay, and I would have liked to have done better, of course – but I still got in! One thing I loved about UCLA is that despite being a huge school, they genuinely care about their students and applicants’ success. They look at all parts of the application – esp. the essay, which is your chance to put your personality into it – to learn what the person is about and what they could bring to the school.

GPA is just one indicator of potential, out of several. Of course you want to do as well as you can, but it sounds like you’re doing your best as it is. I’ve been through this for undergrad and grad school – and it all worked out just fine. Perfection is not a prerequisite for success. Put together an application that tells a story of who you are and what matters to you (go vegetarians! yay!) – and that will tell them what you would bring to the school. You sounds like a very interesting, engaged person and I’m sure the admissions folks will pick up on that right away.

For any naysayers you may hear from – one look at UCLA’s admissions statistics will tell you that some people DO get in with lower grades than they might have hoped for. Most importantly, do not stress out, because first of all, you are way too young to be stressing out about anything. Second, there’s nothing you can do to change past grades. Life is messy. Things happen. The admissions officers read tens of thousands of applications – believe me, there’s nothing that could surprise them. I’m sure there was a reason for everything happening as it did in the past, and I’m sure you’ll be in a stronger position soon. You still have a good overall GPA, and your SAT is awesome. Plus, considering it was just your first semester grades, you certainly have an opportunity second semester to make a strong showing… and of course, first semester of senior year too.

Choose the topics that you’re best at (sounds like Lit and Chem might be good options for you – I just suggest avoiding Spanish, because unless you’re a native speaker, it’s not a great indicator of skill level).
