Ramayana – While Sri Rama accepts Ahalya an innocent, why He makes Sita mata a subject to Agni pariksha ?
Everyone please remember that this question is not about for any isms including criticism. Remember Sri Rama was a great purushothama. i mean He sets the standard for an ideal human as well as an ideal king. Sita mata is glorified for passing her tests and also greatly respected. Sri Rama steps on a stone and the stone becomes a woman, the Ahalya. Sri Rama told her husband to accept her for she was an innocent.

MIND IT…..SITA WAS HIS WIFE.
BUT AHALYA NOT…..
HERE SELF INTEREST PLAYED THE ROLE.

While in Vanvaas and before the kidnapping took place. Ram called agni and ask Sita G to enter in that. Its said that the Sita comes out was not the original one and was Maya only. After victory over lanka he again set agni parikhsha a replaced the real one.

Respected Harita,

None of the answerers above have taken VALMIKI RAMAYANA into consideration clearly.

YOU also have not , in my humble opinion , have not read what Valmiki Ramayana said in this context.It is evident as per your question .

in this KaliYuga , for any doubt in Ramayan ONLY VALMKI RAMAYANA IA THE REFERENCE BOOK AS this is what Maharshi Valmiki , by the Boon (Varam) by Brahma Deva , could see what happened , read the minds of every character and Maharshi Valmiki wrote Ramayana as HE SAW IT IN DHYAANAM.he never said any where his opinion , whether some thing is good or otherwise.he just said what happened.
.
When Brahma Deva gave boon to Maharshi Valmiki, SITA MAATA WAS IN HIS ASHRAM AND BOTH LAVA AND KUSHA WERE YOUNG BOYS.

You must also be aware that when Valmiki Maharshi began writing or composing Sri Ramayana, almost THE ENTIRE RAMAAYANA WAS ABOUT TO COMPLETE and Sri Rama avataara has coming to end soon.This you shall remember.VALMIKI told this Ramayana after completion to Bharadwaja his disciple and and to BOTH LAVA AND KUSHA who were singing it and they sang it in the Royal assembly of Sri Rama .too..

No where in Valmiki Ramayana sri Rama asked Sita Maata to prove her chastity by entering Agni .( Agni Pariksha) .Please kindly refer to valmiki Ramayana.

Sri Rama is a DHARMA PURASHA.Ramo vigrahavaan Dhramah…you know it and I hope agree .

I do not know which Ramayana you are referring as there are many versions by many Devotees .

But AS ALL AGREED VALMIKI RAMAYANA MUST BE REFERRED FOR ANY CLARIFICATION.

Now please see Valmiki Ramayana YUDDHA KAANDA SARGA verses 1 to 25 and SARGA 116 & 117 cmpletely and Sarga 118 from verses 1 to 22 (completely).

sri Rama after defeating Ravana ( after killing Ravana) says that ” may Sita devi be broght after she takes bath , fully decorated , on foot to here as it is not adharma that a queen be seen in yuddham Homam, in Royal Sabha and while I am here ”
Sita Devi comes there stands near sri Rama.
then sri Rama .Spoke thus;

” Sita, my eyes are inflicted , and they (eyes ) are unable to see the Deepam like you ( You are as perfect and as chaste as jyothi but my eyes are infected and I can not see )

Sarga 115 verse 17 of VALMIKI RAMAYANA ;

”’ Prrapta chaaritra sandeyha mama pratimukhey sthitaa,

Deepo neytraatu rasyeyva pratikuuleypi mey drudam ”’

meaning; you are like a Deepam , Agni(so chaste), but my eyes are infected and I can not see you.but by your stay in Ravan camp for so long, your character is now suspected by others.

So Rama agrees Sita is very chaste and takes blame on HIM.

he further says that HE has done all that a HUSBAND shall do to save HIS wife and see that his porusham is proved.You are now free and I give liberty to you that ” YOU MAY NOW GO AND BE UNDER THE CARE OF YOUR CHOICE EITHER LAKSHMANA OR SHATRUGNA OR VIBHEESHANA OR BHARATA”

Here one has to read care fully the verses with reference to Rama`s character and present situation.

Sita while Rama went after the Golden deer , as requested by SITA DEVI, told Lakshman to protect her.But Mareecha cries ”Ah Sita, Ha Lakshmana” before dying.Then SITA MAATA SPOKE CERTAIN HIGHLY HRTING WORDS WITH LAKSMANA, WHO WAS SEEING AND SERVING SITA DEVI AS HIS MOTHER.She said that Lakshman has plans that if Rama dies he can take hold of her (sita).This is most unbearable words that SHE SHOULD NEVER HAVE SPOKEN HAVING KNOWN RAMA`s VALOUR.and Lakskshmana`s character and bhakti.

So Sri Rama knows how Laksmana`s mind was injured and spoke like that so that SITA will feel the PUNISHMENT.

Rama never asked Sita to under go Agni Pareeksha.But SITA MAATA HERSELF CHOSE IT and AGNI DEVA RETURNED HER WITH RESPECT AND ALL DEVATAS AND AGNI TELL RAMA THAT SITA IS AS PURE AS AGNI ITSELF.
Rama says HE KNOWS IT.he expresses HIS love in more than 30 verses.You may read and understand.

Regarding Ahalya also you have quoted wrong.but I have already taken much space.I will say about it some time later.

That is my understanding please.

edit;

Regarding Ahalya.Ahalya was created by Brahma deva as the most beautiful lady, and Indra loved her then.

But Gowtama married her and she was happy with him, in all respects.but it so happened that indra dupes Ahalya in the form or disguise of GOWTAMA and seduced her.She too knew it was INDRA.

So gowtama curses Indra to lose his purushatvam, and also he says to AHALYA ” You have become impure .So be here as BHASMAM(ash ) and none can see you in the three worlds.you do tapas for long long time several thousands years and when SRI RAMA comes here then you will again get your body purified by tapas.

So AHALYA DID NOT BECOME STONE AND RAMA DID NOT TOUCH OR SAT ON THAT.

It is not in VALMIKI RAMAYANA , SEE BAALA KAANDA SARGA 48 AND 49.

after Ramas enters the ashram , the hither to unseen Ahalya in deep penance , raises , in great tejas because of Tapas.

sri Rama , as she was Great Muni Patni along with Lakshmana makes Shastanga Namaskaram to her.She gives the Athithi pooja and after that Gowtama appears and takes her as wife .Ahalya lost her previous body , became ash, and after great penance , regained again the body.So she was as pure as fire..
In Vedic Vivaham as I so many reiterated, there is no question of Divorce.it is the Duty of Husband to see that the fault is rectified permanently and again the life is carried on.

These varioations are by Parama Bhaktas of sri rama like Tulasidas, Molla ,Bhashara etc.They have in their Bhakti paravasyam have written like that to enhance the virtues of ramayana.So None can say they are bad or interpolations.

but when it comes to KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED ONLY VALMIKI RAMAYANA SHALL BE REFERRED AS ELDERS SAID.

You can see such incidents like the following which are not in Valmiki Ramayana;

1.Hanuman after receiving the pearl neclace from Sita mata after Pattabhishekam, tears them to see if there is Rama in any one pearl.
2. The squirrel that said to have helped , being caressed by Rama and the three marks remaining even today.

3.Hanumaan opening his Chest and showing SITA AND RAMA THERE IN HIS HEAERT REGION.

So there are many such thinhs .but they are as I said written out of Bhakti towards Rama and Sita Maata.

So please read Valmiki Ramayana for facts.

Also Shiva Puraanam to know about the Greatness of Gowtama and Ahalya.You will be astonished.

Dear Harithaji,
Namaskaram

I have a logical explanation for your question.

Just narrating from Valmiki Ramayana or Kamba Ramayana will not give us any answer; it will only add to ones confusion, and no one will give any direct answer, because there is none.

Reg Ahalya , the story can be viewed like this ;

The story of Ahalya — sage Gautamas wife who supposedly turned into a pillar of salt because of her liaison with Indra (the giver of rain) — can be similarly reinterpreted.

For example, Ahalya could also represent the un – plowable (a-hal-ya) and infertile land belonging to Gautama near his hermitage. It probably had turned barren through over-use and excessive rains. The excess water from Indras rains could have inundated this land (belonging to Gautama) — churning and bringing up the chemicals in the soil to the surface as salt — making it completely infertile.

This perhaps explains the symbolism behind story of Ahalya being cursed into a pillar of salt because of her association with Indra (or his rainwater). Note that, only later, when Rama (during his exile) would visit the dead (barren) Ahalya and touch her with his feet (or work on the barren land), Ahalya (or a-hal-ya) would be restored to life (making the land fertile again). Needless to say, this story also shows prince Sri. Ramas preparedness to perform any task (high, low or even manual) and adhere to his duty.

This matter of land becoming dead (barren) and whitish or salted because of excessive rainwater and being restored later to health and life (fertility) by a special person, perhaps a knowledgeable and industrious man, indicates a profound awareness and understanding about the issues related to land and climate long ago. Moreover, this type of damage to soil and its eventual restoration seem to be clearly and practically known in the society and were not just a poet
