Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001)

Is Luke Zimmerman mildly retarded? And if so, am I the only one kinda weirded out by this?
Before people tell me that he has Down’s Syndrome and should be treated with respect and shouldn’t be called "retarded," first of all, "mental retardation" is an actual thing, it’s not a derogative term. Second of all, as a Special Ed student at school, (ADHD/bipolar), I literally have to take a short bus along with kids who have everything from childhood-onset schizophrenia to Down’s Syndrome to conditions that include almost complete loss of motor ability to and from school every day. Even though I’m riding with people who are seventeen and eighteen years old, they have to be retaught their ABC’s and basic counting skills every day, and, as a person who has to deal with the crack-of-dawn and end-of-day stress of having to deal with children who scream to communicate and have many day-to-day seizures, I know what it feels like to have to respect these poor kids, even though, at many times, it can be extremely hard.

Anyway, on with my question…

I’ve only seen a little bit of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, (with me being a "teenager" in that sense, I don’t necessarily agree with the way it portrays "my" life), and from what I’ve seen about Tom, and from what I know about Down’s Syndrome from being around special needs kids, I always worry that they’re using parroting or some form of practiced echolalia to get him to say his lines, and it almost insults me because, if he doesn’t know what he’s saying, or what he’s doing, and is just following instructions, it makes me feel like they’re training an exploited animal. I know that Secret Life is simply celebrating kids with special needs as real people, but it’s just that, I don’t know, it feels weird that they’d be using a plausibly retarded person to convey that message through a script that he wouldn’t understand. If he isn’t retarded, I guess I’d feel a little bit better. On the other hand, I feel like I’m the only one that finds this unnerving. Is there anyone out there who feels the same way?

i am just not myself anymore. How to live again?
I’m 14 and I know this may sound childish or crazy but just ignore my age okay? I dated this boy for a 4 months. He was everything to me. He would open doors for me, pull out my chair, carry my things, walk me home. He was great. He was the first boy I ever slow danced with. We took a picture together at the dance and he framed it for me and gave it to me. He was my first kiss.
